The Amazing Blau Varadero Cuba    

The Blau Varadero Cuba has been described as a hidden gem, and many people who stay at the Blau as it is known return year after year.

Situated on but not quite next to the Varadero beach, which by the way has beautiful white sand, the Blau Varadero may not be the most attractive hotel to look at, but it certainly gives value for money.

As is common in Cuba the Blau Varadero is all inclusive, and there are three different restaurants, and generally speaking guests rate the food as amongst the best in Cuba. You will read reports about poor quality catering, but you need to remember that food in Cuba is not up to the standards Europeans have come to expect.

What is excellent at this Cuba hotel are the staff.

The room maids are very good, the rooms being well cleaned. The beach is kept immaculately and the beach bar is very handy serving both food and drink. In fact if you can’t get into the dining rooms then you can always eat at the beach. Please note as well as table d’hôte, there is also a la carte, so you don’t need to always eat

The staff don’t appear to be chasing tips, but it is a kindness in Cuba to perhaps leave them unwanted items when you go home. Guests often bring new toothbrushes, make up, socks, even shoes from home, all of which is very appreciated.

The pool at the Blau Varadero is amongst the best in Cuba. Always very clean, and safe with the nearby pool bar handy for refreshments. If peace and quiet by the pool is your thing, be aware that there are games and shows at the pool on a daily basis. 

When booking your room at the Blau Varadero, try to get top floor, side of the hotel, facing the sea, for the beautiful views.

Reports from guests staying at the Blau Varadero do seem to vary greatly, from the critical of everything, to the total praise for all aspects, so it is difficult to make an objective judgement. You need to remember when judging any hotel in Cuba that we are talking about a third world country so four star here doesn’t equate to four stars in Europe, or elsewhere in the Caribbean for that matter. If you have been disappointed in Barbados or Antigua, then I probably wouldn’t go to Cuba. Put another way, the Caribbean is very different from Europe, and Cuba is very different from the rest of the Caribbean. 

Having said all that, there are professional moaners, people who love to nit pick, and others who just love to add their halfpenny worth so they can see their name in print. Equally there are others who just cannot see things that are wrong. So, when you read reports on a website about the Blau Varadero then you must take the best and the worst and probably eliminate them. After all similar reports on what are supposed to be the best hotels in the world will also have negative comments.

What is recommended is that you look at the Blau Varadero, look closely at the facilities, food outlets, the price you will have to pay, and then from all you have read, try to make a realistic assessment of what it will be like. 

Some things about the Blau Varadero that appear consistently are the quality of the staff, often described as wonderful. They work very hard, the rooms, the pool area, the beach are all kept scrupulously clean. 

The rooms are quite plain at the Blau Varadero, but there are loads of towels and the bed linen is immaculate. If you can try to get a room on the top floor, at the side, and facing the beach. Just remember how long you will spend in your room, and realise you just sleep there.

Food is an important part of any vacation, and the source of most of the complaints. At the Blau Varadero there appear to be very few instances of stomach upsets, which is not always the case where buffets are the main food source. In fact at the Blau, there are very good choices at all three main meals. There is also an a la carte option once a wwk at the Palma real and the Grill restaurant. This means great service, better quality wine, and well presented food by the standards normally found in Cuba
